Hiya! Can someone tell me what the different ranks/paygrades are called in the UK military (escp. the Army and the Royal Marines) on a grade for grade (E1-X, W1-X, O1-X)? Thanks in advance! cheers, Morten!

There used to be discrepancies between the Army and the RM, but they were ironed out in 1999, leaving the two services on an equal footing. Here goes...... ARMY / RM                       RN                                    RAF General                            Admiral                      Air Chief Marshall Lt-General                        Vice Admiral            Air Marshall Major-General                  Rear Admiral            Air Vice-Marshall Brigadier                           Commodore            Air Commodore Colonel                              Captain                     Group Captain Lt-Colonel                          Commander             Wing Commander Major                                  Lt-Commander         Squadron Leader Captain                                Lieutenant                Flight Lieutenant Lieutenant                            Sub-Lieutenant        Flying Officer 2nd Lt                                  Midshipman              Pilot Officer Warrant Officer 1st Class    Warrant Officer        Warrant Officer Warrant Officer 2nd Class The equivalence for other ranks is complex - the pay grades have different implications. ARMY Staff Sergeant - Sergeant - Corporal - Lance Corporal - Private RM Colour Sergeant - Sergeant - Corporal - Lance Corporal - Marine RN Chief Petty Officer - Petty Officer - Leading Seaman - Able Seaman RAF Flight Sergeant - Sergeant - Corporal - Senior Aircraftman - Leading Aircraftman - Aircraftman. There are regimental variations, different _title_s depending on trade, and all sorts of other oddities, but that is basically it. Conor O'Neill

Sergeant - Sgt Staff Sergeant - SSgt Infantry Staff Sergeants are called 'Colour Sergeants'. Horse Guards sergeants are called 'Corporals of Horse', their warrant officers are Corporal-Major rather than Sergeant-Major.

Can someone tell me what the different ranks/paygrades are called in the UK military (escp. the Army and the Royal Marines) on a grade for grade (E1-X, W1-X, O1-X)? There is a page which compares the British and US ranks at: http://www.helsinki.fi/~degroot/anglomil.html There are some job-related inconsistencies in the table. For instance: - a squad of nine men is commanded by an E-5 Sergeant in the US Army - a section of eight men is commanded by a Corporal in the British Army. The platoon sergeant (second-in-command of an infantry platoon) is: - an E-6 Staff Sergeant in the US Army - a Sergeant in the British Army The senior soldier in a Rifle Company is: - an E-8 First Sergeant in the US Army - a WO2 in the British Army. I'd suggest that the page places the British Army's NCOs one grade lower than it should, in relation to the US Army. Martin First of Foot, Right of the Line
