Did U.S. tanks use diesel engines during World War 2? Near the beginning of the movie Patton , he is quoted as saying that he warned them that gasoline in tanks was unnecessarily hazardous. As far as I can remember only the Russians used diesel engines in their tanks during WW2. Diesels had a very poor power to weight and power to volume ratio those days.
