Ok, I have gone over the old posts in misc.survivalism and I am trying to narrow this down to a more specific set of questions. We live in IL and would be bugging out to likely IL, IN, WI. I am looking at Fall / Winter boots. I have heard that you want two pair, one for being active, marching, and a more insulated pair to wear around camp. Just got my wife a pair of Matterhorn by
www.coveshoe.com they are the Military one's. They are MODEL: 102494 (Men's) 10 Waterproof All Leather Field Boot with Non-_meta_llic Safety Toe - Insulated The women's did not have any safety toe. Cove told me about the Black Knight 8 Safety Toe Cold Weather Boot - Insulated MODEL: 1599 (Men's). It have 600 Grams thins late insulation. I have not heard of seen any reports on these yet. 1. How much insulation considering the time of year (Fall, Winter), and where we live is right? 2. What is the best sock for long term bugging out walking / marching in Fall / Winter? I currently have a brand of sock called Smart Wool. They are supposedly wicking socks, I have used them in the dead of winter on my Michigan deer hunts with a pair of Rocky's Deer Stalkers, but this deer boot has 700 grams of insulation, and I do not have to walk very far after I get off my ATV, plus I sit in a stand all day. I have not noticed my feet getting very cold so far. I am thinking it would be too hot to march very far in this combo though. The Smart Wool socks are not OD military issue socks; camouflage is becoming a factor to me in my gear purchases. Any one using these socks, how have they held up, or should I look for more of a BDU type of sock. 3. Is this the right boot for this area, and for a woman in a winter marching type of bug out? Will the 200 grams of insulation do with the Smart Wool socks? Cove said that they sell these boots to women sometimes; they said you just have to try them on and fit them. Brigade has an exchange program, as long as the boots have not been worn outside. I got the boots from Brigade Quartermasters www.actiongear.com Brigade Part Number MCT030756 1 MATTERHORN COMP TOE, 200G Thanks Ed
